"The body bears the burden of trauma; it responds with pain, illness, and unease, long after the mind has tried to move on."

— Peter A. Levine, Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma

Somatic experiencing (SEP)

Addressing Trauma Symptoms & Chronic Pain

I offer Somatic Experiencing® as a specialised, body-focused approach to healing trauma, chronic pain, and unexplained physical symptoms. This method works by directly engaging with the body and nervous system to gently release the effects of stored trauma and restore natural regulation. Unlike psychotherapy, Somatic Experiencing does not rely on talking through past events; instead, it supports the body’s innate capacity to heal through movement, attuned touch and mindful awareness of sensation. It is particularly effective when psychological or talk-based therapies alone have not fully addressed the body's role in holding and resolving distress.

Who can it help?

Somatic Experiencing is helpful for individuals dealing with trauma, chronic pain, anxiety, and stress-related conditions. It is especially effective for those who have not found relief through traditional therapy or medical treatments. The approach benefits patients looking for a body-centred solution to unresolved emotional or physical distress.

Some conditions that I have successfully employed SE with include post surgical body pain and numbness, back pain, apparent tendonitis, recently developed body twitches or tics, chronic dissociation, panic attacks, and PTSD including procedural bodily memories.

To consider

Not everyone is initially easily connected to their bodily sensations. Often this requires that a number of sessions are dedicated to helping the client become more familiar with their bodily sensations in order that they can track them and report on them during the session. While this is not psychotherapy, there is a degree of verbal engagement. The distinction with psychotherapy is that SE is not a talk-led practice, and begins with the body. It often involves careful consent based touch.
